| Description | Written from 37 Great George Street, Westminster, London. The letter explains that Russell sees the big question posed by Brunel's letter dated 16 October 1855 to be whether using the amount of iron put in place on the Eastern Steam Navigation Company's ship in a given period fairly represents the amount of work done on the ship during that period and whether 3000 tons is a good estimate of the amount of iron left to be fixed onto the ship. Russell disagrees that this is a fair representation of the work done since poor weather in a month might lead to the same amount of expenditure for Russell but not the same amount of iron fixed on the ship because more work has been done in the workshop rather than on the ship. Russell therefore leaves it up to Brunel's judgement to decide if Russell has done the amount of work that he has said he would. Russell also calls Brunel's attention to the dates of the payments and the fact that the payment that was due on 25th October is now very overdue. Russell remarks on the considerable inconvenience of these late payments and his hope to avoid such late payments in the future. |
