Activity | Left Germany in 1937 and came to England. Naturalised after the war, he joined Oliver Simon at the Curwen Press and in 1949 became the recommended successor to Jan Tschichold at Penguin. He was head of production in 1956 and a director in 1960. Among his many triumphs were the patterned covers of Penguin Poets and Scores, the later Christmas Books, the Buildings of England, the Pelican History of Art and much more. He retired in 1976 but remained a consultant to Penguin until his death in the midst of the golden jubilee celebrations. |
