ActivityPublished an influential textbook, 'Die neue Typographie' in 1928 (an English translation appeared in 1995). With the coming of the Nazis, he emigrated to Switzerland and from 1947 to 1949 worked for Penguin Books Ltd as their first professional typographer. His brief was to oversee the whole process of design and production and an integral part of his reforms was to draft the 'Penguin Composition Rules' as a guide to printers. Tschichold designed the definitive penguin device in its oval frame and introduced the vertical grid later developed by his recommended successor, Hans Schmoller.
