Description | Printed portraits of indivuduals, collected by members of the Fry family. The portrait images were extracted from book sources and collected in loose format by John Doyle Fry as a recreational activity. The extra-illustrated volumes were compiled by Albert Magnus Fry, John Doyle Fry and Priscilla A. Fry. Extra-illustrated books, engraved prints and portraits mostly collected by John Doyle Fry and given by his son Henry R. Fry. Chiefly British subjects from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, with a smaller European section. Various specialised groupings including actors, Quakers, criminals and popes, and a fine collection of London views and maps.
In addition to the loose portraits, the collection contains many extra-illustrated volumes dispersed throughout the Restricted Volumes section of Special Collections on a variety of subjects, as well as a number of categories of portraits of individuals.
These portraits consist of the following categories: Theatrical: Actors and Actresses, Theatres, Theatrical Scenes. Monuments: Alphabetical order. Views: Miscellaneous, London, Strawberry Hill. Kings and Queens: English, French, European, Worldwide. Artists: Alphabetic Order. Criminals: Alphabetic Order. Mayors: Alphabetic Order. Popes: Alphabetic Order. Quakers: Alphabetic Order. Napoleonic: Alphabetic Order. Coloured (portraits that are tinted, inked, watercoloured or otherwise coloured): People, Alphabetic Order. English - Images of individuals in English History, Literature, Science and Social Life (more properly could be called British, as it includes Scots, Welsh and Irish): Alphabetic Order, diverse subjects. Foreign - Images of individuals in the history of countries that are not, by default, part of the British Isles: Alphabetic Order, diverse subjects.
Immediate Source of Acquisition The collection was bequeathed to the University of Bristol by Miss E.B. Fry, the estate of Albert Magnus Fry, and Priscilla Fry.
Finding Aids The portraits are in ordered and filed by category. No handlist exists for the collection; however individual portraits are slowly being input on to the Library online catalogue and index cards are available in the reading room.
