DescriptionVolume contains minutes of the Canvassing Committee meetings, 3 March 1880 - 7 November 1881 and 16 February 1887 - 20 April 1887. The meeting minutes detail decisions and actions taken to appeal for money to fund the University College Bristol.

The 1880-1881 minutes include a draft letter of appeal, draft form for the promises of subscriptions to the Sustentation Fund, names of people involved in the canvassing committee and lists of subscriptions to the 'Building Fund' and 'Sustentation Fund' including names and amount. Item also details the composition of an alphabetised list of potential subscribers for members of the committee to contact. This was created from lists of subscribers obtained by the committee from local institutions, such as 'the Infirmary and 'the Benevolent Institution'. Volume also covers the examination of these lists and the assigning of contacts to different members of 'the Council'. Minutes also reference the formulation of a 'Ladies Committee to cooperate with the canvassing committee' organised by 'Miss Fry of Goldney House' as well as details of their signifcant involvement in contacting potential donors and securing financial aid for University College Bristol.

The 16 April 1887-20 April 1887 minutes cover the re-creation of the Canvassing Committee, to raise an additional £600 a year for the following four years, as well as for the completion of additional college buildings for the Medical School estimated at £5500. Includes names of committee members, a 'circular of Appeal', resolutions for meeting with the public regarding funding for University College Bristol, printed lists of subscriptions and donations, as well as adminsitration of the funds raised.

- A statement, created for circulation 'showing the position and purposes of the College, the subjects taught and the number of students, together with its financial position' by F.N. Budd, 10 May 1880 [p.9-11]
- Draft letter from Gilbert Elliot, F.N. Budd, Lewis Fry and W. Proctor Baker to be circulated to prospective donors, as well as 'city companies', 9 August 1880 [p.19-21]
- Letter from Registrar, J.N. Langley to subscribers to the College funds, attaching a copy of the above 'statement' by F.N. Budd, requesting them to share this with anyone 'whom you think you could influence to befriend us', 2 March 1881 [p.33]

The sustentation fund was a fund created through subscriptions and donations by members of the public, used towards the running costs of University College Bristol as well as its expansion and improvement.
