Edward Bernard Tawney (1840-1882) was the first lecturer in geology employed by University College, Bristol. Tawney had been awarded Diplomas in Geology and Mining from the Royal School of Mines (Imperial College, London) in 1863 as well as gaining scholarships and medals in recognition of his outstanding scholarship and abilities. He pursued his interest in geology, publishing many papers on his investigations. In 1872 Tawney became Assistant Curator, and later Curator, at Bristol Museum and Library, where he was responsible for the geology collections, and gave lectures in geology at University College, Bristol from 1876 to 1878. He continued with his fieldwork and contributed an essay, "Physical geography and geology" (pp. 319-382) in, British Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1878 Tawney was appointed Assistant to the Woodwardian Professor at the University of Cambridge which at the time had the best geological collection in Britain. Whilst at Cambridge he was awarded an honorary MA and made a Fellow of Trinity College, as well as teaching courses on palaeontolgy, petrology, stratigraphical geology, and "dynamical geology". He died four years later. Tawney's papers from his time at Cambridge are held at the Sedgewick Museum of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge.
