Nicholas Kitto, a photographer with a background in accountancy, has lived in Hong Kong since 1983. Both of his father’s parents lived and worked in China, with the first member of the family having arrived there in the 1860s. From 2007 until 2018, Kitto photographed surving pre-1950 buildings in former 'Treaty Ports' in China and Taiwan, working with the historian Robert Neild. Locations photographed include Harbin, Shenyang, Yingkou, Dalian, Lushun, Beidaihe, Qinhuangdao, Shanhaiguan, Tanguu, Dagu, Tianjin, Jinan, Weifang, Longkou, Yantai, Weihai, Qingdao, Nanjing, Wuhu, Zhenjiang, Hankou, Jiujiang, Lushan, Yichang, Shashi, Chongqing, Changsha, Suzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Fuzhou, Kuliang, Xiamen, Shantou, Guangzhou, Shamian Island, Shamshui, Jiangmen, Beihai, Chengdu, Bisezhai, Mengzi, Tengchong, Dadaochang, Tamsui, Keelung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and South Cape (but not Hong Kong or Macau, as these were both colonies). Many of these colour photographs were published in 'Trading Places, A Photographic Journey Through China's Former Treaty Ports' by Nicholas Kitto (Blacksmith Books, 2020).
