Title
Michelle Walmsley: Burford Holiday Activities Play Scheme for girls and young women, Manchester
Description
Album relating to the Burford Holiday Activities Play Scheme, Manchester, 1986. This was a holiday scheme aimed at girls and young women, probably donated by Michelle Walmsley of the Girls Work Project, Central Manchester Youth Service. Harriet Thompson and Jan Hanson of the ISIS Women's Photography Co-op, and Yvonne Gunn were also involved in the project. The project took place from 21 July-29 August 1986.
The Burford Project was a short stay centre to help familes, girls, and their social workers examine their problems, during a period of 6-8 weeks; and was funded by Manchester County Council Social Services and Manchester Education. Includes photographs of girls and young women (of teenage age) carrying out activities on the project including sports, music, skills, brick building, motorcycle riding, and cooking). Also involved young mothers from the Mother and Baby Unit.
The album examines the success of the project, which suffered from low numbers.
