Contains photocopies of considerable Penguin correspondence, both internal and external, plus photocopies of some Penguin publicity materials; reviews; book covers, both Penguin and earlier hardback editions; proof pages.
Internal correspondence includes many jocular memos between A.S.B. Glover and J.M. Cohen; and discussions concerning complaints received from India House about the entry on Kashmir in the Dictionary of Politics (Reference series R10) and from an Australian journalist about a mistake in the book, as well as a detailed memorandum on alterations that might be required in a future edition.
Photocopies of Refugees 1960 (Miscellaneous series Q36) and of the Punch article of 30 December 1959 which inspired Allen Lane to publish; draft publicity letter written by Hans Schmoller for Allen Lane, and other publicity material; letter from Allen Lane to Ronald Searle and Kaye Webb saying that most of the 69,000 print run had been sold in the first two weeks in print, 13 May 1960 (the book having been issued on 27 April).
External correspondents include, amongst others, W.H. Auden, John Betjeman, Hugh Casson, Kenneth Clark, Edward Crankshaw, Elizabeth David, N.J. Dawood, T.S. Eliot, Fay Godwin, Robert Graves, Patience Gray, C. Day Lewis, Julian Huxley, Hammond Innes, Storm Jameson, Roy Jenkins, H.D.F. Kitto, Doris Lessing, Basil Liddell Hart, Max Mallowan, Chapman Pincher, Ronald Searle, Edith Sitwell, Evelyn Waugh, W.E. Williams and John Wyndham.
The correspondence with Elizabeth David includes a two-page letter to Eunice Frost and ten-page commentary which David had been asked to supply on the manuscript of Plats du Jour (Penguin Handbook PH32) by Patience Gray and Primrose Boyd, 6 June 1955.
