Frank's interest in this subject led to collaboration with a Bristol colleague, J.W. Steeds, and L. Brodsley, then Visiting Lecturer in the Department of English, University of California Los Angeles, who had written to the Royal Society 28 January 1983 offering an article on Prince Rupert's Drops for publication in Notes and Records, Sir William Paton, editor, suggested to Frank (who had also been planning an article for Notes and Records) that a joint paper might be in order.
