| Description | Copy of a letter describing the formation of the laying of the Great Western Railway permanent way which consisted of longitudinal timbers anchored to piles as against the stone blocks and iron chairs for supporting the rails at intervals as used by the Stephensons. It was probably this letter which furnished Wood with the information for his report to the Great Western Railway Directors of 10 December 1838.
