Description | Clerk's copy of a report by Isambard Kingdom Brunel describing some general principles he intends to implement on any railway he is concerned with including the 7ft gauge and the 'systematic application of an inclined plane to be worked by assistant power for the purpose of reducing considerably the gradients on the rest of the line...' It is included here because the decision of the Irish Railway Commissioners to adopt a broader gauge for their railways was influential in persuading the Directors to the Great Western Railway to adopt a 7ft gauge.
Written on paper watermarked 1868, this item was presumably copied for Isambard Kingdom Brunel's 1870 life of his father. |
