| Description | Packet of papers and draft papers relating to the construction of the Great Eastern. The packet includes draft estimates for work to be done and materials needed, invoices for quantities of materials received and placed on the the ship, progress reports, specifications for parts of the ship and drafts of letters and memoranda. The packet also contains detailed calculations of tide levels and detailed calculations for the positions of centre of gravity of various parts of the ship and the completed ship.
The sheets are numbered individually and sequentially and items may cover several numbered sheets. The sheets also indicate that at some point they have been fastened together by the upper left hand corner and show signs of slight rusting around the hole by which they were joined together. Some of the items have subsequently been copied out into Brunel's letter-books of Great Eastern correspondence (DM1306/11/1). |
