TitleLetter from William Day & Co to Captain Claxton offering an invention for use on the Great Eastern
DescriptionWritten from Bow Road, London. The letter boasts that Day & Co have successfully developed their patent marine cement, a method of preventing corrosion on the inside of bilge bottom-plates and rivet-heads, which they believe could save shipping companies vast amounts of money by reducing the need for replacement and repair of damage caused by corrosion. The letter lists several of the ships which have tried this marine cement, including the Alhambra and the Rajah (belonging to the Peninsular and Oriental Company), the Tyne and Alrato (belonging to the Royal Mail Company) and the Tynemouth (belonging to W.S. Lindsay). The letter offers to supply further information as well as samples of the cement in question. The second page of the letter offers a list of testimonials relating to the efficacy of the marine cement.
