TitleLetter from Richard Kusel, a tobacconist, to Isambard Kingdom Brunel offering an invention for use on the Great Eastern
DescriptionWritten from 20 Nassau Place, Commercial Road East, London. The letter introduces Kusel's ideas for a new type of paddle wheel based on new principles which should give increased speed and safety and which he hopes will usher in a new era of steam navigation. Since Kusel has no experience or connections in the steam navigation world, he asks for Brunel's assistance to launch the idea by providing a favourable notice. Kusel hopes that, if he discloses his idea to Brunel and Brunel thinks it potentially profitable, that Brunel will ensure that Kusel receives his just financial reward and asks Brunel write back confirming this and also offering advice on whether the idea should be registered or patented. The letter also congratulates Brunel on the successful launching of the Great Eastern. There is an annotation in the lower corner of the back page directing the shape of the reply to the letter.
