Description | The letter expresses Bower's understanding that a man from York has been hired to provide gas lighting for the Great Eastern and his surprise, since Bower received a letter from Brunel promising that nothing like that would be done for the Great Eastern's first voyage. The letter also explains that Bower has been making experiments with gas lighting. The letter discusses the apparatus that Bower is using for his experiments, expresses his belief that it is unequalled and wonders if he should continue his experiments. There is a pencil annotation across one corner of the reverse directing the shape of the answer to the letter and confirming that there is no truth to the report that someone has already been hired to provide gas lighting for the Great Eastern. The letter has been copied out as DM1306/11/1/5/folio 45-46 in Brunel's volumes of Great Eastern correspondence. |
