TitleLetter from Michael Burke to Sir John Brunell (sic) of the Great Eastern Steam Ship
DescriptionWritten from 76 Gilbert Street, Liverpool. The letter encloses a plan for allowing the adjustment of an iron ship's compass without the need for the present method of swinging the ship. The letter describes some of the features of Burke's plan and how it is to be used. The letter offers the idea for Brunel's use, trusting that if Brunel adopts it, he will suitably recompense Burke. There is an annotation under the signature directing the shape of Brunel's response explaining that he has no time to explain to Burke how ship's compasses are adjusted as well as an annotation initialled by Joseph Bennett with the date of the answer to the letter. The letter appears to have consistently been mis-addressed to 'Sir John Brunell'. The letter has been copied out as DM1306/11/1/5/folio 96-97 in Brunel's letter books of Great Eastern correspondence.
