TitlePamphlet on Hoyland Steam Coal
DescriptionPamphlet printed by the Hoyland and Elsecar Colliery, Barnsley. The pamphlet announces the Hoyland Steam Coal's inclusion on the Government list for supplying the steam navy and reprints an extract from the Report on Coals Suited to the Steam Navy, by Sir Henry de la Beche and Dr Lyon Playfair. The report gives details of the properties of Hoyland coal, including its evaporative power, the weight of a cubic foot of coal, the space occupied by 1 ton of coal and various figures relating to the coal's efficiency and quality, including the amount of clinker, percentage amount of coke and composition. The note confirming the inclusion of Hoyland Coal on the list of coals supplied to the Naval contract is dated 26 July 1852 while there is a handwritten note on the reverse of the notice dated 12 February 1856, possibly indicating the date of its receipt by Brunel.
