TitleLetter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to J. H. Yates, secretary of the Great Ship Company
DescriptionThe letter explains how difficult it would be to check with any accuracy the amount of work that has been completed in fitting out the Great Eastern according to the Statement of Progress, particularly since some of the elements to the statement of progress are not confirmed. Brunel considers that the important point is whether it will be possible to complete all the work within the specified time, which John Scott Russell seems confident is possible, although Brunel would feel more confident if it was settled how the work is to be done. The letter also comments on Brunel's belief that neither the Directors nor the Captain of the ship are aware of how the crew and officers' accommodation is to be done and his assertion that this needs to be sorted out before the work begins and raises other matters that need to be cleared up and discussed.
