| Description | Written from Great Eastern, Portland. The letter explains that Mr Jacomb left the ship the previous day to travel to London and will, no doubt, have reported to Brunel on the Great Eastern's trial voyage and explains what answer Brereton sent to Dr Thompson's telegram. Brereton promises to return to London as soon as the inquest is over for the three men pronounced dead on reaching the shore and reports than three men were sent to the hospital and three more are injured but on board the Great Eastern, with one man not expected to last the night, and one man lost overboard. Brereton reports on the injuries sustained by Mr Briscoe who was in the bottom of the stoke hole when the funnel exploded. |
