TitleLetter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to Henry Wollaston Blake
DescriptionThe letter warns Blake that the deadline for completing the steam heater has passed and the date for the ship's departure is only a fortnight away. Brunel expresses the need for him to have a long trial of the engines, at least six hours long and requests Blake ensure that the engines are completed in sufficient time to allow the trial the following weekend. The letter raises some problems or deficiencies of the engine that have been reported to Brunel by Mr McLennan, the chief engineer and begs Blake ensure they are rectified. Brunel also asks if Blake will be able to make a stuffing box to allow the screw shaft to pass through the bulkhead behind the engine room and promises that Blake will get a formal order from the Directors as soon as Brunel sees and approves a sketch. Brunel also comments on some alterations that have been made in the construction of the super-heating apparatus.
