Title
Letter from William Jacomb to Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Description
Written from the Great Eastern. The letter explains that the testing of Watt & Co's boilers will be delayed but that Jacomb has managed to have the hulk that was impeding the loading of coal moved so that the loading from the coal barge has taken place. The letter also updates Brunel on several matters including the installation of the third iron masts and the beginning of work to enlarge the auxiliary engine boiler room as Brunel requested as well as the installation of a separate staircase for officers to use and the beginning of work to cast a circular staircase leading down through the ventilation shaft to the screw engine room, similar to the one installed to the paddle engine room which is not well liked. The letter also informs Brunel of the proposed arrangements for the stokers' accomodation and for the installation of water closets in the aft sponson beams for the use of both passengers and crew. Jacomb also mentions the work that remains to be done on the ship.
