TitleLetter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to J. H. Yates, secretary of the Great Ship Company
DescriptionThe letter reports that Brunel has read the statement of progress with regards to the completion of the ironwork on the Great Eastern and believes the ship may be completed with considerable exertion and that he has drawn John Scott Russell's attention to several matters that need to be sorted out immediately but leaves the question of passenger and officer accommodation to the Managing Directors and the Captain but reminds them of the need to consider the accommodation needed for the stokers and the engineers since Brunel has not been able to find any satisfactory plan for the accommodation of both screw and paddle engineers. Brunel also mentions that he has raised with John Scott Russell a serious defect in the construction of the masts and suggested a possible way of solving the defect but has not received an answer from Russell which Brunel fears means that Russell is not prepared to solve the problem.
