| Title | Letter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to John Scott Russell |
| Description | The letter asks Russell for the results of his examination of the masts and especially the strength of the way the shrouds are attached to the masts and reminds Russell that he had wished to meet him on the ship. Brunel comments on his feeling that the keys or hooks attaching the shrouds are not strong enough and are definitely not as strong as Brunel designed them to be. Brunel expresses concern about the depth of the keys and the inadequate bearing surfaces of the keys in the mast, describes his other concern about the manufacture of the keys and offers suggestions for remedying the problem. |
