The letter explains that Montague Leverson & Hawley have received a letter from Mr Hankshaw who suggests that it would be desirable to give evidence on what would usually be included in a contract for a screw engine and in a general contract for completely building a ship and asks Brunel for a letter of introduction to anyone who has useful experience who may be a suitable witness.
