| Title | Letter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to John Scott Russell |
| Description | The letter requests Russell immediately give orders to start work on cutting the holes in the separating webs between the two skins of the hull and comments on the need to fix the auxiliary paddle wheel engine which is making considerable noise as it runs which Brunel suspects is due to insufficient fly-wheel power at the engine. Brunel also mentions the need to introduce ventilation down to the bottom of the engine compartment as well as a way of escape upwards from the compartment. The letter also comments on the need to introduce a means of ventilation in other areas of the ship, including the lower decks, the bottom of the ship and the screw shaft compartment. |
