TitleLetter from John Yates, secretary of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company, to Isambard Kingdom Brunel
DescriptionWritten from 13 Gresham Street, London. The letter confirms that Yates has summoned a special meeting of the Board of Directors and the Committee of Works of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and explains what work has been done to prepare the financial information requested by the resolutions of the previous meeting of the Court of Directors. Yates confirms that the ship will need to be launched by 5 October 1857 at the latest, giving only six weeks to complete all the work remaining on the ship, and confirms Yates' intention to be at the Eastern Steam Navigation Company's shipyard in Millwall to supervise the works. Yates informs Brunel that none of the railway bars have arrived for the launching ways despite the ways having been ready for them for at least a week. Yates requests Brunel urge the speedy delivery of the railway bars and the chain cable and anchors and also requests Brunel let him know if all the necessary bars and plates required for the launch have been ordered from Beale and Co.
