| Title | Letter from I. P. Joule to Isambard Kingdom Brunel |
| Description | Written from Oak Field, Moss Side, Manchester. The letter expresses Joule's great interest in the launching of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company's ship and his great disappointment at the failure of the launch. The letter offers Joule's suggestion that instead of pushing the ship down the launching way a lesser force might be used to pull the ship down alternately by stem and stern and suggests that the recoil from a few small cannon may be enough to give a sudden shock to start the ship's movement. There is a sketch of Joule's idea on Folio 345. |
