TitleLetter from John Yates, secretary of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company, to Isambard Kingdom Brunel
DescriptionWritten from 13 Gresham Street, London. The letter confirms that arrangements are in progress with the Union Bank and sends Brunel the minutes of a meeting of the Board of Directors from 29 August 1857 (Folios 152-155). Yates reiterates the importance of ensuring that the ship is launched exactly when intended and expresses his concern that the Blaenavon Iron Company have misled Brunel as to their ability to execute his orders promptly. A postscript expresses Yates' understanding that Brunel's friend Robert McCalmont will be at the launch at Saltash and comments that he has been re-elected as a Director of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and one of the guarantors of the loan that is being raised to finance the completion of the ship.
