TitleLetter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to the Secretary of the Admiralty
DescriptionWritten from 18 Duke Street, Westminster, London. The letter asks for assistance from the Lords of the Admiralty and explains that Brunel is currently making preparations for the launching (intended to take place on 5 October 1857) of the ship that he is now building. Brunel requests the Admiralty's assistance in permitting the Eastern Steam Navigation Company to use the moorings opposite Deptford Dock Yard and also to put at the disposal of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company any capstans or mooring posts to allow them to gain purchase from the dock yard, as well as from the wharfs on either side belonging to Messers Penn and Messers Humphries and Dykes. The letter also requests the loan of two large capstans and blocks, chains and hawsers and mooring lamps. The letter promises, on behalf of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company, to return all items borrowed in good condition.
