DescriptionLetterbook for the Eastern Steam Navigation Company from November 1955 to November 1856. This volume contains copies of correspondence sent and received by Isambard Kingdom Brunel as part of his work as Chief Engineer of the Great Eastern. Correspondence includes letters relating to business matters, minutes and resolutions of the meetings of the Committee of Works and the Board of Directors of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and correspondence with inventors, engineers and designers who either worked on the project or were attempting to introduce their inventions and designs to Brunel's notice. There is also considerable correspondence relating to the financial difficulties of John Scott Russell who owned the shipyard where the Great Eastern was built.
Although the ship had not yet been named, the cataloguing uses the term Great Eastern unless the writer has used a specific phrase to describe or name the ship.
