Title
Letter from Professor C. Piazzi Smyth to Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Description
Written from 1 Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh. The letter informs Brunel that Smyth has recently applied for a patent for some of his ideas, although not for any of the ideas to be used on the big ship or for any ideas that will extend or improve the science. The letter also discusses Smyth's improvements to his observational instruments, the progress that he has made and the elements that are successful. The letter also describes the construction of various elements of the instrument, which includes three parts: a stand, an artificial horizon and a circular instrument and compares Smyth's ideas with existing instruments or theories.
