Title | Letter from Professor C. Piazzi Smyth to Isambard Kingdom Brunel |
Description | Written from the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. The letter confirms that Smyth has visited the instrument maker Milne & Sons and set them to work on the observational instruments for Brunel and that the will set Adies to work as soon as Aides is back at work. The letter also describes to Brunel a special lamp that did not get sent back to Smyth with the rest of his instruments and inventions and which he hopes Brunel can send him to be converted into a sea observing lamp. Smyth describes how he envisions such a lamp might work and also mentions a scientific paper that he has just read which discusses reducing the errors from a sextant. There is a small sketch of the lamp on Folio 379. |
