The letter explains that Brunel wants to gather information about the depth of immersion of fixed paddle-wheel floats and the greatest depth of immersion that a large sea-going steamer can cope with and asks them to provide Brunel with specific information about individual vessels, the diameter of their paddle wheel, the breadth or depth of the paddle board and the height of the paddle shaft above a given draft.
