Title | Letter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to C. Claxton |
Description | Written from 18 Duke Street, Westminster, London. The letter asks for Claxton's opinion on whether horizontal windlasses might not be a good idea for moving the barrel and chain or cable rather than using vertical capstans or even several capstans connected together. Brunel suggests that a windlass might be made from a simple capstan head such as might be seen in use in the goods shed on the railway at Bristol or in the Departure Passenger Line at Paddington Station. There are sketches on Folio 266 suggesting how Brunel thinks the windlass might look. |
