TitleLetter from William Jacomb to Isambard Kingdom Brunel
DescriptionWritten from Eastern Steam Navigation Co, Millwall, London. The letter explains that Jacomb has visited the workshop of the firm Mares and seen the forging of the iron screw shaft. The letter describes the progress and the construction of the shaft and its dimensions and weight. The letter also mentions that Jacomb has seen a detailed drawing of the finished shaft which has been sent to Boulton & Watt, manufacturers of the screw engine. The letter also reports on the results of Jacomb's inquiries into the method of heating the rivets used in the hull of the ship. There is a sketch on Folio 196 showing the shape and dimensions of the shaft that Jacomb saw.
