Title | Report of a meeting of the Court of Directors of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and a copy of a letter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel to the Directors of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company discussed at the Directors' meeting |
Description | There is a crossed through pencil note at the head of the note relating to the topics of the letter. The report records that a letter from Isambard Kingdom Brunel was laid before the Court of Directors and is followed by a copy of that letter, dated 18 May 1853. Brunel's letter describes his progress in drawing up specifications for the ship, the engine that he is designing as well as the process that he has followed in order to develop the specification and lists the firms who have responded to the invitation to tender for building the engine. The letter comments on the fact that the screw engine they are contemplating for the as yet unnamed great ship will be the largest such engine yet built. The letter describes the various designs that have been suggested for the engines and Brunel's feelings about the prices and designs as well as his recommendation that they should use the firm of Watt & Co for the screw engines and John Scott Russell for the paddle engine. |
