| Description | The report explains that Brunel was unable to attend the first committee meeting on 15 June 1852 but that John Scott Russell attended instead and explained Brunel's plans for the proposed ship. The report also confirms that Brunel was able to attend a meeting on the 18th June, when the committee passed several unanimous resolutions. These resolutions expressed the committee's satisfaction that it might be possible to build a ship large enough to carry, as well as sufficient quantities of freight and passengers, enough of its own coal to allow for passage from England to Calcutta [Kolkata] without stopping to recoal. Furthermore, the committee recorded their satisfaction that there was sufficient traffic to make the proposed route and ships profitable. The letter records the fact that Brunel and John Scott Russell have both offered the names of people who might be willing to become directors of the company and covers various suggestions put forward relating to the possible mechanisms for organising the company and the work and suggesting an Extraordinary General Meeting be called to implement some of these suggestions. |
