The letter announces that Roberts has recently patented some "Improvements in and applicable to Boats, ships and other vessels" which he believes may be relevant to the production of the ships being planned by the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and describes the advantages of his designs. These improvements particularly relate to the improved efficiency of the overall ship's lines, the strength and expense of the overall form of the ship, the engines and boilers, the taking in and stowing of coal, the ventilation and lighting of the ship, the rudder, the propeller, the stowage of fresh water and the anchor.
