Title | Copy of a letter to C.D. Bruce Esquire from C.A. Beaumont, pilot in the Bengal Service |
Description | Written from Calcutta [Kolkata]. The letter gives Beaumont's professional opinion, based on the reports he is reading in English newspapers of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company's plans, that a ship with a draft of 30 feet would be unable to enter the Hooghley River and a ship of 5000 tons would be unable to navigate further than Diamond Harbour. The letter was originally enclosed with John Yates' letter to Brunel dated 15 November 1852 and a postscript from Bruce after the end of Beaumont's letter testifies to Beaumont's skill as a river pilot. |
