The letter expresses Brunel's pleasure that Airy is taking an interest in his request for help with the observational instruments for the Eastern Steam Navigation Company's ship. The letter promises to be personally responsible for the cost of any instruments that Airy purchases on his behalf until the Eastern Steam Navigation Company can step in to bear the costs and discusses Brunel's preliminary plans for the size of the ship and the inclusion of both paddle wheels and screw propellers.
